What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

Not every dental problem requires immediate attention, but some situations simply cannot wait. You should seek urgent dental care if you are experiencing any of the following:

  • Severe toothache — intense, persistent pain that cannot be managed with over-the-counter painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen
  • Dental abscess — a bacterial infection causing swelling, throbbing pain, or fever that can spread if left untreated
  • Knocked-out or fractured tooth — trauma resulting in a completely dislodged or broken tooth, which requires immediate attention to maximise the chance of saving the tooth
  • Lost or broken fillings or crowns — especially when the exposed tooth is causing significant pain or sensitivity
  • Uncontrolled bleeding — persistent bleeding in the mouth following a dental procedure or injury that does not stop on its own
  • Facial or oral swelling — significant swelling in the mouth, gums, or face that may indicate an infection requiring urgent treatment

What to Do in a Dental Emergency

Call us first. If you are a patient at The Dental Health Centre and are experiencing a dental emergency during practice hours, please telephone us immediately. Our team will assess your situation and arrange the earliest possible appointment. We do everything we can to accommodate emergency cases on the same day.

If you are in pain while waiting to be seen, over-the-counter pain relief such as ibuprofen or paracetamol can help manage discomfort temporarily. For a knocked-out adult tooth, handle it carefully by the crown, rinse it gently without scrubbing, and if possible, place it back in the socket or store it in milk — then call us straight away.

Outside of practice hours, you can contact NHS 111 online at 111.nhs.uk or by calling 111 for out-of-hours urgent dental triage and guidance. Please do not attend hospital A&E for dental pain unless you have serious facial injuries or are unable to breathe or swallow.

Cantilever Bridge A cantilever bridge is supported by a crown on just one adjacent tooth rather than two. This option is typically recommended where there is only one healthy tooth available on one side of the gap, most commonly in the front of the mouth.

Maryland Bridge Also known as a resin-bonded bridge, the Maryland bridge uses a discreet metal or porcelain framework bonded to the backs of the adjacent teeth — requiring minimal preparation of the surrounding teeth. It is most suited to replacing front teeth where bite forces are lighter.

Implant-Supported Bridge For patients missing several teeth in a row, or where the neighbouring teeth are not suitable as anchors, an implant-supported bridge offers the most stable and long-lasting solution — anchored securely into the jawbone without relying on adjacent natural teeth for support.
